English shoes

As I’m having a few RedTxt business meetings my favourite Salomon Gore Tex shoes isn’t the most appropriate footwear some of the time. I’ve had a few pair of shoes from Church’s shoes in the 1980-90s but I’ve not bought a pair of English shoes for 20 years. After reading a very informative series of articles here and here, I checked out the shops in London: Cleverly, Berluti, Oliver Sweeney and Crockett & Jones. Sweeney had some nice shoes but were more nightclub than board room. Berluti shoes were beautiful but I didn’t want to spend that much. Cleverly had some classic designs but the ones I liked were also crazily priced. In the end a pair of Monkton shoes in grained black leather from Crockett & Jones got the guernsey. They remind me of a pair of Church’s Westbury monk straps in bookbinder leather with gold buckles I had when I was an articled clerk. They were one of my favourite shoes and it was a sad day when the leather uppers finally cracked. I hope these last as long. One day I might have the time to wait for a pair of bespoke shoes to be made. Maybe even a pair of shoes from John Lobb.
