This is a nice story about what to take to shoot a sports event. And from a Nikon shooter’s point of view. It’s also enlightening to see what the Beijing Organising committee will be providing media.

Story about the Vics at the soccer tournament in Sydney. Photo: Sydney Low (!)

My ancient Canon S900 got replaced with a Epson Stylus Photo R1900 this weekend. Now the family’s happy to get some prints of all the recent photos.

My Drobo arrived today. Got a few Samsung 750GB disks for $99 at Centrecom to put in them. Let’s see how it goes…

It’s a beauty – but time to move it out of the cupboard:

These look like an interesting dinner conversation piece!

Ken Rockwell has written an interesting piece about shooting in 5×4 ratio. So I’ll give it a try and see how it comes out… It’s a shame to throw away the pixels though.

Like Strobist – this is a great resource of how-tos pro photo life.

The FFV just announced the Travel Support Fund for getting helping parents of the state squad kids travel to the national events next month. If you’re feeling generous please donate a few $. There are some photos of the U13 Metro Girls Squad here: http://www.thelows.org/vic-u13/

I want one of these Patagonia carry on bags for my next trip… I currently use a Lands End bag which I’ve had since 1988 that can hold a small elephant, but this bag looks like it can hold a large elephant.

Got my set of Strobist Lighting DVDs today. Am watching and learning over the next few days.

Had my last bottle of 2000 La Massa Giorgio Primo Toscana with a roast beef tonight. Just an awesome wine and drinking very well. Perfumed, sweet and awesome length…

We finally had to get our Our Smeg SA708X oven serviced. It hadn’t been working on fan-forced for a few months. So the broken bits included 2 door hinges which caused the microswitch on the door to short because it wasn’t holding the door closed firmly. The blown microswitch, and two light bulbs.

This is a really cool hack to get a SB-800 to be an optical slave: 1. First, turn on your flash.2. Now get into the submenu by pressing and holding the “sel” button for 2 seconds.3. Arrow right (the “single tree” button) to get the upper right quadrant highlighted.4. Push the select button again.5. Scoll […]

Jon Udell wrote about a pretty cool way to get extra security for your checked bags here. Has anyone actually tried this? – in Australia?

OneLight DVD: This DVD tutorial looks like it’ll be worthing buying. Zack already has a great tutorial on shooting with white seamless background on his site.

Getting Ready for the Close Up: A nice piece on UK photographer Platon about portrait photography. Video interview here.

One day I’ll have My Day With Jay: If you ever get to the point that you think “it’s about the camera,” you should spend a day with Jay. He could make magic with a Kodak disposable camera.

I picked up an AlienBees ABR800 Ringflash used from a nice chap from Iceland. I can’t wait to see some of the people and product shots using this light.

I’ve been looking for a simple way to make realistic looking drop shadows to simulate the look of a piece of paper on a piece of paper (if you get what I mean). This is the best tutorial I found: How To Make Drop Shadows

So I saw an ad for Australian Pork featuring a pork schnitzel dish at Richmond Hill Larder done by chef Clair Feig. Being a schnitzel fan I went there after seeing a photo of the dish. Don’t bother, it’s a ripoff. The actual dish is described as “Pork schnitzel in a toasted fennel seed crumb […]

So after shooting for 2 days at last week’s Barista competition I found the gap between my 17-35 and 70-200 quite frustrating. While I could get a nice tight shot of the barista’s face I found most of the wide shots only needed 30mm or so. But when I wanted to get a bit tighter […]

OK – I just found my old blogger account and thought I’d rejuvenate it after a 2 year hiatus. I’m going to write about my photography, food and wine stuff and travel thoughts right here! To get things started, here are some recent photos of the Australian and Victorian Barista championships: http://www.thelows.org/syd/austbarcomp/http://www.thelows.org/syd/austbarheats/http://www.thelows.org/syd/VicBarComp/
