All about 3G and mobile coverage in Australia

This is a great post about what’s what in Australia. In summary:

GSM 900/1800 = Standard for Optus, Vodafone and Telstra
But if you are on 3 you should roam onto Telstra GSM, but note in places like Tasmania, this doesn’t work so you’ll have no coverage.
3G on UMTS 2100: Telstra 3G, Optus 3G, Vodafone 3G, Three (3)
3G on UMTS 900: Optus yesG and Vodafone
3G on UMTS 850: Telstra NextG

Important points:
– iPhone does not have UMTS 900 so you wont get 3G in places like Tasmania
– 3G phones like Google’s Nexus One doesn’t have UMTS 850, so you won’t get 3G at all
– Handsets like SE K610i on Three (3) with only UMTS 2100 won’t roam onto GSM in Tasmania, and if on Optus, won’t get any coverage except for big cities where there is 2100 coverage.

What Chase Says…

There are no excuses:

Tassie photos

Here are a few images from Tassie. Some shot on an iPhone and some on a Nikon D3s and D700:

3 Network Broken Roaming in Tasmania

If you have an iPhone with a 3 SIM it will roam onto Telstra’s NextG network in Tassie. Very good coverage. It’s a UMTS 850 network which the iPhone works with.

However, if you have a handset that doesn’t support UMTS 850 like the Sony K610i it will not roam onto Telstra’s GSM 900/1800 network.

So, everywhere outside Hobart (and probably Launceston and Devonport) there is no GSM roaming for 3 customers unless they have a UMTS 850 handset. How stupid is that?

Choosing a GPS app for iPhone

Had to pick an app for my iPhone. The choices were TomTom, Sygic and Navigon. As all three have had an update recently none of the current reviews were much help. Since TomTom didn’t have Text to Speech I decided to get Sygic. Well, initial impressions are very good. [update: TomTom’s current release now has TTS according to some reviews on Whirlpool] I also got the TomTom car kit  and the two work together flawlessly. It’s the best GPS I’ve had in a car. Better than the OEM ones on BMWs.
