The amazing green screen

Chase Jarvis blogged this “how it was done” video from a Hollywood studio. With the power of home computers these days I can see many budding cinematorgraphers shooting some amazing scenes with a $600 HD video enabled Nikon or Canon DSLR and a simple 50mm 1.4 lens. I’m hopeful iMovie ’10 will have simple video compositing features, and then let the masses play!

Xmas Lunch Video – shot on a camera!

[Tip: Watch it in HD for best quality – click on the “HD” button and then Full Screen – bottom right]

Photos and video from lunch on Christmas Day 2009. First time using the HD video features of a DSLR. All images shot using a 85mm 1.4 lens and lit using a Litepanel MicroPro light.

Back in 2005 a DV video camera was the state of the art in video for non pros – and DV was standard definition. In 2009, the still camera can shoot HD video in the same body that takes the photographs. That’s progress!

HD Video shot with Nikon D3s and processed with iMovie 09. Similar video capabilities are now on the Nikon D90, D3000, D5000, D300s and D3s.

Settings for an Accurate Histogram

The Luminous Landscape writes: This is an important thing to get right when you’re shooting in RAW: Settings for an Accurate Histogram. I was surprised how much difference changing the Contrast setting in the Picture Control setting of the Nikon DSLRs make on the shape of the histogram. I’ve now got a RAW shooting bank in Custom Settings that has the Contrast dialled right down in the Picture Control it defaults on. Thanks Michael!
