As one sport (soccer) finishes a new one (rugby union) starts. Here’s a gallery of week 1 of the Super 15s rugby tournament that’s now in Melbourne in its first season with Melbourne’s own team the Rebels.

The final round of this year’s A-League. It was good shooting football again after all the tennis! Farewell to two socceroos who retired after this match. More images here.

For sports photographers, after you’ve mastered getting a sharp image, the next challenge is composing your shot. After deciding what you want your subject to be doing you’ll need to get yourself into a position where you can get the shot with a clean background. Picture editors and publications don’t want cluttered backgrounds so you’ll […]

Rob from NPS told me this tip. If you connect your camera to the Nikon Transfer (Windows and Mac) software there’s a simple 1-click way to sync the clock on your camera bodies. If you’re shooting with multiple bodies you’ll know how important this is for post processing! Here’s a screenshot of the magic button. […]

It’s a wrap. 14 days. 941 images uploaded to Southcreek – more to come in the coming days. Huge thanks to Nikon Professional Services for the 600mm, lens and sensor cleaning and their fridge which was a temporary staging point for the Heineken beers. Special thanks to Julie, Rob, Danny, and Terence from Nikon. Day […]

The pointy end of the tournament is approaching and the losses are more painful to bear. Day 9 images here.

This is an images from the “other” side of the court, where there are 10 seats for photographers to shoot from the umpire’s side. Can’t get this aspect from the main side of the court. More images from day 8 here.

Photos from Day 7 are here.

Images from Day 5 and Day 6 at the Open.

The Heart v Victory Derby was always going to be interesting. Again, left the tennis to grab some images. Got to capture the 3 goals in the first half. Images here.

Time to do some more funky shots. Rod Laver Arena is bathed in bright sunlight until 4pm. The playing area is lit but the walls are in shade. There’s about a 3 stop difference so if you underexpose by 1-stop when the player is in line with the background in shade you get beautiful images. […]

Shot some matches with this lens today. This shot of Alicia Molik was taken from the concourse of Rod Laver Arena in her round 2 match of the 2011 Australian Open. I officially heart this lens. It’s AF is as fast as the 400mm and when a shallow depth of field isn’t super critical then […]

Dashed over the road to AAMI Park from the Australian Open and grabbed a few shots in the first half of the match. Images here.

Day 3 had bright, harsh, Aussie sun. Discovered how beautiful the harsh light at Rod Laver Arena can be. More images here.

Getting into the swing of things. Main gallery is here. with searches for Day 1 and Day 2.

The stars turned out to help the flood fund. Images here

While shooting on court you get the emotion and atmosphere, to get a tennis shot with a clean background this is where you have to be located to get a shot like this. That’s a Getty Images and a daily newspaper photographer waiting for the right moment. They are there for the whole match.

Ans we have a winner! Images here.

Many sports are not affected by rain. Soccer, Australian Rules Football to name two. But tennis is. No play for a whole day and then the sun came out. Shooting from a high angle makes a clean background but you need lots of patience if the player is a baseliner. There’s usually one chance for […]

Day 1 of the AAMI Classic. And then onto the Australian Open next week. Rain interrupted play but here are my first shots of tennis I’ve ever shot:
