Missing OpenCl.dll finally solved

Ever since I upgraded the video card to an ATI on the Windows Media Center box an error has popped up on every reboot. Something about “kdbsync.exe reporting a missing file: opencl.dll” There are lots of posts all over the net about finding it in a driver repository directory through to downloading it from various web sites.
The answer so a lot simpler – download the latest ATI driver and reinstall. Apparently the OpenCl file is part of an open source library that’s needed to optimise parallel processing. Downloaded and installed and all fixed!

Upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8

My upgrade to the next generation of operating system for Macs has been uneventful, which is what you want to hear for major software upgrades. All of my major photo and general software is working without a hitch: Lightroom 4, Photoshop CS6, Office 2011, Twitter clients, Filemaker, and Moneydance. The only exception is Hotspot Shield, a VPN service for when I’m on the road and need to use hotspots. Not sure if the kernel panics are related to HS or something else, but for now, it’s removed.

Night football at ISO 8000 with Nikon D4

It’s pre-season for the A-League and Melbourne Victory have started their training matches. These matches are at the grounds of semi-professional teams from the Victorian Premier League. The grounds are lit well enough for playing but for photography it’s a challenge. To stop the motion it’s best to shoot at 1/000th of a second. At these grounds, even with a f2.8 400mm lens that means shooting at ISO 6400-8000. As these shots show, with a bit of noise reduction in Lightroom the results are excellent. More of a problem is the dynamic range when players are directly under the light. Shooting in RAW allows the highlights to be recovered and the shadow detail boosted. It’s actually a lot of fun to shoot night matches with the D4! Just click on the photo and you can see the EXIF data if interested. More photos here: flickr.com/photos/syd/sets/72157630773802770/

International rugby doesn’t come to Melbourne very often, but it’s good when it does! More photos here.
