F1 – The F1 Paddock

This is the inner sanctum. The Paddock is the area where the F1 team have their lounges, eating area and drivers’ quiet space. At Melbourne it’s behind the pits, separated by an internal road/path. To get into the Paddock you enter by scanning your pass at the turnstiles.

F1 – up high

Followers of F1 will see many shots of the cars from the angle on the right of the image below. The left side of the image shows where the photographer is located for these shots. To get there you climb up a narrow ladder usually with a big heavy piece of glass like a 400mm or 600mm on your shoulder and another body with a 70-200mm around your neck or shoulder. That’s not the hard part, it’s coming down that’s a challenge. Oh, and it’s not a place to shoot from if you’re not comfortable with heights. There are no safety ropes.

Getting in and out of a F1 circuit

Accredited media had access to a car park opposite the media centre. But getting there is a journey in itself! Even if you live in the same city, it’s amazing what they’ve done to the place as the saying goes.

F1 – race day

F1 Aust Grand Prix - March 27
At last, the sun came out. After 3 days of cloudy, rainy weather Melbourne brought out some autumn sunshine. The late afternoon sun allowed some nice creative lighting of the cars on many parts of the circuit. This was shot as the cars exited turn 3. More images here.
