I’ll be covering the Super Rugby for ZUMA Press. Here’s a pic from my first match and more pics here:

Where was that shot from?
Here’s a behind the scenes look at the location of where turn 1 photos are taken. There’s a scaffold that’s about 2 stories high at the end of the main straight, after the sand trap. On race day, it gets filled with photographers who start arriving about an hour before the race starts to stake out their position. Most shoot with a 400-600mm lens and hope there’s a crash. No crash in 2012.

gets shots like this:

F1 – Race Day
Raceday arrives. It’s actually more like race evening as the race starts at 5pm. The F1 activity starts early with lots of special guests arriving in the F1 Paddock, and the formal stuff starts around 3pm with the drivers’ photos. Then it’s getting into position and then lots of waiting around. Here are some photos of the day with my favourites below:

F1 – Qualifying and Nikon D4 Autofocus
After yesterday’s rain, qualification was in bright late afternoon sunshine. I’ve also worked out that the Nikon D4’s autofocus needs a shutter speed of at least 1/1000th to work best in AF-C or tracking autofocus mode. It struggles (with me anyway) at 1/500th, but bumping it up works a treat. Here are the photos of qualifying and below are my favourites.
