My foodie friend and I are off to The Fat Duck. It took over 200 phone calls when the booking opened. He had two phones on speed-dial. His mobile and his landline. Here’s a screenshot of the call log. According to a recent article the restaurant gets 30,000 phone calls a day requesting reservations. If […]

Just wrote about what exposure mode(s) I use for shooting sports over at Big Lens Fast Shutter. Have a read and let me know what you think! It’s how I get images like these:

Costa from Goal Weekly asked if I could help out this weekend and cover a Women’s Premier League match. So went out to DISC and shot in sun, wind and then rain. Makes you appreciate how nice stadiums with a roof is! More photos here.

Learn how and why you should use the AF-ON button to focus. Read my post on Big Lens Fast Shutter here: http://biglensfastshutter.com/2011/06/05/syd-use-a-different-button-to-focus/

It’s been awhile since the Socceroos played in Melbourne. Here are some images from their match on Tuesday night. All of these were shot from the sideline where you’re not permitted to sit at the domestic A-League and Asian Cup matches unless you’re the official photographer. One of my favourites is the first image where […]

I had a wonderful 5 days in NYC at the Jay Maisel Workshop. It’s hard to explain Jay’s magic but suffice to say that he is referred to by many of his contemporaries as “God”. Jay is a wonderful teacher and his philosophy is simple. The great photos have “Light, Colour and Gesture” and this […]

I’ve been in Utah for the past week and went on a tour to a canyon called Secret Canyon. Took the opportunity to take the GoPro out for a spin. Mounted it on the windscreen and got the following footage on the way back from the canyon. and here’s the camera mounted on the windscreen:

When I get into a new country, I have a routine for getting connected onto the local mobile network and the Internet. So here’s my routine for the US: – Find an AT&T store. You can go to a dealer, but I find the AT&T stores are the most knowledgeable. Ask for a GoPhone Pay […]

In New York for a couple of weeks. You can follow my photos here:

This is the inner sanctum. The Paddock is the area where the F1 team have their lounges, eating area and drivers’ quiet space. At Melbourne it’s behind the pits, separated by an internal road/path. To get into the Paddock you enter by scanning your pass at the turnstiles.

Followers of F1 will see many shots of the cars from the angle on the right of the image below. The left side of the image shows where the photographer is located for these shots. To get there you climb up a narrow ladder usually with a big heavy piece of glass like a 400mm […]

Accredited media had access to a car park opposite the media centre. But getting there is a journey in itself! Even if you live in the same city, it’s amazing what they’ve done to the place as the saying goes. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-MuWmA-lCs]

At last, the sun came out. After 3 days of cloudy, rainy weather Melbourne brought out some autumn sunshine. The late afternoon sun allowed some nice creative lighting of the cars on many parts of the circuit. This was shot as the cars exited turn 3. More images here.

For over a year now I’ve been wondering what shooting sport would be like with the D3x and the 24 megapixels it offers – twice the number of pixels of the D3 and the D3s. There are just times when you need more reach from a 400mm. If I had more pixels, then I don’t […]

Three days of Formula One in Melbourne. Shooting this for Southcreek with what is a surprisingly small number of accredited photographers. There’s probably around 60 covering the event for international and local publications and wires. But, 60 still feels a lot when packed into one place. Here’s a photo by Getty Images of the pack […]

So I’ve had the Luma Loop strap for about a month now. I’ve barely used it but I’ve already found two problems that cause me concern about the design and materials. On the first day out with the strap I was shooting the world superbikes and had the strap attached to my Nikon D3 and […]

A small crowd for this year’s first AFC match in Melbourne. Images here. Good to be shooting soccer again after a bit of a lull.

Many ISPs have a two-tier quota system. My ISP gives me a separate data allowance for off peak which is between 2am and 8am. I thought this would be a perfect for uploading images to my client’s FTP server. But, how do I kick off a transfer in the middle of the night? I’ve been […]

One of my Nikon bodies had a auto focus problem at the World Superbike event. So I dropped it into Nikon’s Melbourne office and it’s now come back all fixed and polished. Just one of the fabulous service that Nikon provides its customers. NPS is the name of a free support program that you can […]

This is the recipe for Crayfish Thermidor from a TV series called Surfing the Menu. It’s from Season 3 and is shot in Esperance. The episode features the Southern Rock Lobster which is why they cooked one the Thermidor way! I finally found it for download on iTunes. If you’re a lover of crayfish/lobster, it’s […]

Race day dawned rainy, but luckily it cleared up for a dry race. The front runners dominated so there was little close racing. Some images here.

A sunny Saturday afternoon for Superbike qualifying. Images here.

Went to Phillip Island for an official testing session ahead of round 1 of the FIM Superbike Championships. Photos here.
