Day one of our stay in the North of Paris in the Montmartre area. We have an amazing view from our apartment:

Our local Metro stop is Abbesses:

We went to check out some markets and “passages” – covered lanes:

Then a spot of lunch at the Palais Royal:

and some shopping at Galeries Lafayette where the building is more special than the items for sale:

Bread worth moving to Paris for
We arrived back in Paris, this time staying in Montmartre. We had to get some basics for the apartment, bread, milk, eggs. I know there’s an award winning bakery on the same street and luckily, we went there and got some items as they’re off on August holidays as of tonight for 2 weeks. So, this is what the best baguette in Paris looks like:

This store on Rue des Abbesses from the chain Le Grenier à Pain won 1st Prize for Best Baguette in Paris, 2010, by baker Djibril Bodian. We bought one baguette but after taking a bite, we knew we had to buy another one just to be sure. Here are some other items from the store:

Lyon
The girls left for their second French course in Vichy today:

and I had scrambled eggs at Passionément Truffe to compare it to Chez Bruno from a couple of weeks ago. Verdict? Chez Bruno wins for value, ambience and cooking. But, if Lyon is easier to get to!

Dinner was at one of the four Paul Bocuse brasseries in Lyon. We chose Le Nord for traditional Lyonnaise food:

The classic chicken from Bresse in a casserole:

and one of the signature deserts – Rum Baba:

Great stuff

and… a lemon squeezer device I’ve not seen before:

Paris to Lyon
A week goes fast. So today, we packed our bags and left Paris for Lyon for the weekend.
We had almost two hours to kill at Gare du Lyon so it was lucky there is a beautiful bar/restaurant there called Le Train Bleu. It’s a lovely example of architecture from the Belle Epoch and a great find if you want to experience the history of Paris in the 1900s:

After a comfortable 2 hour train ride and checking in we strolled down to the Les Halles du Lyon food hall. Here’s a snapshot – and more tomorrow:

We celebrated Mia’s 13th birthday at Brasserie Georges, a Lyon brasserie:

and finished off with the french version of a bomb alaska called “l’Omelette Norvegienne”:
