Food

We had no plans for dinner and as the restaurant next door was closed on Sunday nights, Marc suggested a place in nearby Cahuzac-sur-Vère. So off we went to Château des Salettes. What a great place and food – a 1 hat Michelin place no less! (click on the photo to see description)

The dining room has a great view but on our first night it was raining. However, on this evening we had a great sunset to accompany our meal: Kim had the Aubrac menu and I had a main course of Aubrac beef. But we both started with amuse buche: The black cod from the Aubrac […]

Day 2 at Bras was better weather than our first day. The morning was foggy but the afternoon saw some sun so a chance for some photos: And our room keys are attached to the horns of the local Aubrac cow:

Our first serious meal this trip is at Michel Bras. He’s a legend in cooking having invented much of what is done today in haute cuisine. In a quote attributed to Wiley Dufresne “he has been copied by every chef in the world. We’ve all taken a page out of the Bras book – the […]

27 July. Travel day from Avignon to Laguiole, about 300kms, where we’ve got some serious eating to do at Michel Bras. Our route takes us south west to Montpellier and then north west on the A75 to Lagioule passing through the beautiful Millau Viaduct. Enroute was “eat in the car” lunch of baguette, serrano ham […]

We left Stockholm and flew into Geneva for an overnight and then a 6.40am train to Avignon. This picture from the air isn’t the airport in Geneva but a highway that disappears into the mountain: Next morning we arrived in Avignon, got our rental car and dropped off our bags at our hotel before setting […]

A sunny and muggy day. Enroute to the Vasa museum we walked through the Karlaplan area: The Vasa museum is on its own island, so we needed to cross a bridge to get there: The Vasa is a viking war ship that sank on its maiden voyage: Then it was off for a boat ride […]

My foodie friend and I are off to The Fat Duck. It took over 200 phone calls when the booking opened. He had two phones on speed-dial. His mobile and his landline. Here’s a screenshot of the call log. According to a recent article the restaurant gets 30,000 phone calls a day requesting reservations. If […]

This is the recipe for Crayfish Thermidor from a TV series called Surfing the Menu. It’s from Season 3 and is shot in Esperance. The episode features the Southern Rock Lobster which is why they cooked one the Thermidor way! I finally found it for download on iTunes. If you’re a lover of crayfish/lobster, it’s […]

I’ve shot a lot of coffee making competitions but I haven’t done it for a couple of years now. Here are some images from the 2nd day of the Victorian Barista and Latte Art championships. Really difficult lighting but handled very well by the Nikon D3 and D3s. Images here.

From The Age today. A list of places to try.

Duck, pavlova and dark chocolates…

Staying on the food theme, I’ve now got the two rices Heston Blumenthal uses in his perfect risotto. Gli Aironi and Acquarello. Both have local distributors so you two can recreate your own perfect risotto!

Inspired by the TV show Willie’s Chocolate Revolution which is about Willie Harcourt-Cooze’s crusade to educate the population about real chocolate, I tracked down a source of Amedei Chuao, regarded as the world’s best chocolate. When the Amedei arrived we did a little taste test with some other 70%+ chocolate bars. Guess which one blew […]

Here’s a good list good list of places to try if you’re in Melbourne CBD for lunch from Melbourne Gastronome.

Worth trying. It’s not blow your socks off but it’s one of the few places that I’ll make a return trip to. Recommended! We sat here: http://www.momorestaurant.com.au/ The special for the night was his Duck Bisteya. This is a photo of the pidgeon version. Basically confit duck baked in puff pastry. Very good:

The maddest beer I’ve ever tasted. The De Molen brewery’s Hel & Verdoemenis (Hell & Damnation) beer is a stout that’s got a taste all to itself. Not my cup of tea. I like their other stout Tsarina Esra better.

If you’re after some interesting beer give Hopfix from Denmark a try. Brewed by Christian Skovdal Andersen the beer is described as “copper coloured India Pale Ale with plenty of fruity hop flavor and aroma. It features a dry finish and a firm bitterness balanced by chewy caramel malt. The ale is brewed with rye […]

With all the rain and storms around I thought I’d stay off the football pitch and do some table top photography. Inspired by a blog article by Clint Decker on his Flickr page via Petapixel, I followed his instructions and set out to do some of my own “shooting things falling into water”. Click on […]

Shot some images of my friend Andrew Lew roasting coffee at his Maling Room cafe.

Shot this event for Five Senses. Photos from the Über Project night at Proud Mary.

A change of pace from football. A commercial job for Five Senses Coffee to shoot a cafe for their monthly news Really challenging lighting with high dynamic range but the D3’s raw files coped beautifully in post processing.
