Dymo’s latest software for the Mac is version 8.3.1 and it doesn’t support the LabelWriter 330. Don’t despair if you have one of these printers as the previous version 8.3.0 is working fine for me. You can download it here.
It was finally time to upgrade my Macbook with a Solid State Drive before doing the operating system upgrade to Lion 10.7. The OWC 6G SSD is a proven disk, unlike a couple of others I’ve had problems with in the past year. Fingers crossed it will be reliable.
Bletchley Park is a the museum for encryption, secret codes and computer geeks. This is where digital computers began with Alan Turing’s ingenuity and a team of other uber geeks. They cracked the codes that allowed the Brits to shorten and win the war against the Germans. Click on the pics for more info. A [...]
22 October. Had to get a local prepaid SIM card while in Venice. All the research suggested TIM, the Telecom Italia mobile carrier. But the letting agent’s Andrea suggested we look at Vodafone as he said they had the better coverage. So next day I went to the Vodafone store next to the Rialto vaporetto [...]
Since upgrading to ios5 on my iPhone 4 my iPhone’s battery goes from 100% to 85% in 6-7 hours overnight. This is pretty bad as its not really doing anything. So I’ve tried to figure out why this is happening and I think I’ve killed the battery eating monster in my iPhone4: Turn off all [...]
Now that we’re in a new country it’s time to do the choose a mobile carrier shuffle again. And the lucky winner for 4 new prepaid customers is… GiffGaff. 3 UK’s All in one plans came very close but we’re going to give this MVNO that operates on the O2 network a go for a [...]
Despite lots of resources on the web, getting a prepaid SIM card with a data plan is still time consuming and frustrating. The Orange Mobicarte with the Internet Max data plan seems to be the most recommended so here are my tips if you’re going down this road: – Go to an Orange shop and [...]
Had to get online in Stockholm to use Google maps and other online resources. Help? There’s an excellent guide called Pay as you go sim with data Wiki and the entry for Sweden lists several options. I went to the local Phone House opposite my hotel and purchased a Telenor plan called Talk More. The [...]
Many ISPs have a two-tier quota system. My ISP gives me a separate data allowance for off peak which is between 2am and 8am. I thought this would be a perfect for uploading images to my client’s FTP server. But, how do I kick off a transfer in the middle of the night? I’ve been [...]
There’s nothing like bird droppings on a black car. Here’s a nice splodge on the bonnet of our black Golf. It’s been there for a few weeks and normal polish didn’t get it off. Time for some product selection. A bit of Meguire’s Fine Cut Cleaner, a random orbital polisher, orange cutting pad, and it [...]
My DVD Player (ver 5.4) was showing a black screen and Google couldn’t shed any light on what the problem was. A bit of problem solving identified a setting in the player under Deinterlace. Seems selecting Optimal or Good Quality on my i7 Macbook Pro breaks the player. Better Quality works fine.
I finally migrated my web site, blog and image archive into a single platform. Previously I had Slideshowpro Director serve the images on my main site, wordpress.com to host my blog and Photoshelter for the image archive. The migration is now a free Graph Paper Press wordpress theme (Widescreen) that’s covering the main site http://syd-low.com, [...]
Just finished using Shuttersnitch at a party and went to copy the files off two Eye-Fi cards. I tried to use a high speed Lexar reader and found an error which I’ve posted on the Eye-Fi forums. I’ve discovered an interesting issue. It seems you MUST use the Eye-Fi supplied card reader to copy files [...]
I use Lightroom and Photo Mechanic as my primary photo processing tools. If I’m editing in the field everything happens on my Macbook Pro laptop. But if I’m editing at home I will use a Mac Pro 8-core Nehalem with a main disk and two backups. I recently reconfigured the disks to get more space [...]
So the Eye-fi card works fine with the Aluratek router. For the next test, is it compatible with a Telstra 3G USB modem? Well it sure is. Here’s the modem plugged into the router’s slot: There’s one trick to setting it up – you need to choose some manual settings. The config that’s embedded in [...]
I got intrigued by Rob Galbraith’s post on Wireless photography with an iPad and ShutterSnitch so I got the bits referred to in his article and am trying to replicate it. Aluratek modem and Eye-Fi cards from Adorama. All good so far…
I have been on the Internet since 1995, selling Apple Newton software via email and web sites. I co-founded Australia’s largest free ISP in 2000 and I’ve built 3 other online-Internet companies. I can claim to know a bit about online businesses. In the April 2000 Internet, telco and tech meltdown, one of the catalyst [...]
Pretty rare these days but my Mac Pro has developed some bad RAM. Swapped it out for a 2GB DIMM and all’s well again.
iPad working via 3G on Telstra – had to put in the APN manually as iTunes didn’t download the carrier settings straight away. Right on time.
As with most photographers I get asked for my camera recommendations. So based on all the recent reviews and my personal experience here are the two types of cameras I would buy: 1. For no compromise photos, the Nikon D700 or D3s. The D700 if you don’t do sport and the D3s if you do. [...]
This is a great post about what’s what in Australia. In summary: GSM 900/1800 = Standard for Optus, Vodafone and TelstraBut if you are on 3 you should roam onto Telstra GSM, but note in places like Tasmania, this doesn’t work so you’ll have no coverage.3G on UMTS 2100: Telstra 3G, Optus 3G, Vodafone 3G, Three [...]
If you have an iPhone with a 3 SIM it will roam onto Telstra’s NextG network in Tassie. Very good coverage. It’s a UMTS 850 network which the iPhone works with. However, if you have a handset that doesn’t support UMTS 850 like the Sony K610i it will not roam onto Telstra’s GSM 900/1800 network. [...]
Had to pick an app for my iPhone. The choices were TomTom, Sygic and Navigon. As all three have had an update recently none of the current reviews were much help. Since TomTom didn’t have Text to Speech I decided to get Sygic. Well, initial impressions are very good. [update: TomTom's current release now has [...]
So I got excited by TB3′s new search feature which is similar to the once great Zoe idea. However, after importing my Mail.app local files and letting it index overnight TB3′s not a replacement for Mail.app and Spotlight. TB3′s search feature presents the results in a more contextually useful way allowing the results to be [...]
