After the coffee competition it was back to AAMI Park for Round 22 of the A-League. At last it was a cloudy day so shooting conditions were a lot better than that last few rounds. Images here.

I’ve shot a lot of coffee making competitions but I haven’t done it for a couple of years now. Here are some images from the 2nd day of the Victorian Barista and Latte Art championships. Really difficult lighting but handled very well by the Nikon D3 and D3s. Images here.

From The Age today. A list of places to try.

There’s nothing like bird droppings on a black car. Here’s a nice splodge on the bonnet of our black Golf. It’s been there for a few weeks and normal polish didn’t get it off. Time for some product selection. A bit of Meguire’s Fine Cut Cleaner, a random orbital polisher, orange cutting pad, and it […]

Another 3pm afternoon match. Crazy light, but the upside is that the last 10 minutes was in the Golden Hour.  More images here.

Inspired by AP photographer Morry Gash’s photo of the NBA match Heat vs Bucks shot with a remote camera I got the Pocketwizards out today. Most remotes are set behind the goal with a fish-eye lens or an ultrawide. But I decided to try something a bit different. Lens used was a 70-200mm at 190mm. […]

I wrote about this issue 3 years ago on Flickr when I first changed over from Canon to Nikon. The problem hit me on Monday when I was shooting the A-League Round 20 match and I was tracking Robbie Kruse with my D3 and the 70-200mm. Robbie weaved around for quite awhile and my D3 […]

My DVD Player (ver 5.4) was showing a black screen and Google couldn’t shed any light on what the problem was. A bit of problem solving identified a setting in the player under Deinterlace. Seems selecting Optimal or Good Quality on my i7 Macbook Pro breaks the player. Better Quality works fine.

A late afternoon match so the sun was hitting half the pitch as usual. Not idea but got some nice high-contrast shots. Ran into the buffer limits on the D3 – need to see if I can optimise the settings a bit more to get the full 26 raw shot. Full gallery is here.

Duck, pavlova and dark chocolates…

The Canon D60 was my first DSLR. In 2002 it was USD$2,000 for the body. In 2010, the Canon EOS 550D is USD$799. Key stats: 6MP versus 18MP. So it was more than twice as expensive and had 1/3rd the number of pixels. How far we’ve come. I had a play with a 550D tonight, […]

Mesmerizing Photo of James and Wade and how it was taken.

I was putting together a Twitter List of photo agencies and came across this useful link: Agencies and Collectives « P H O T O J O U R N A L I S M L I N K S. You can also subscribe to my Twitter list here: https://twitter.com/#!/list/sydlow/photo-agencies which follows a few agencies […]

Photos from round 19 action from AAMI park is here.

A double header at AAMI Park with the Melbourne women’s team as the curtain raiser for the men’s match. Had fun shooting with a 1.7 teleconverter on the 400mm as the afternoon light allowed me to lose 1.5 stops. Click here for more images.

At today’s W-League match I was positioned at the end of the field because of the afternoon sun lighting conditions I’ve blogged about in the past. Since most of the action was the far end of the stadium I thought I’d pull out the 1.7X teleconverter and put it on the 400mm. That combo makes […]

Found this on Pixiq. It’s mainly for photojournalists and travel but the essence is still useful for sports photography:  How to Write a Professional Photo Caption. “Viewed from Philopappos Hill, the temples on the Acropolis still dominate Athens, old and new. Beyond, on the right, is the conical hill of Mount Lycabettus.”

Staying on the food theme, I’ve now got the two rices Heston Blumenthal uses in his perfect risotto. Gli Aironi and Acquarello. Both have local distributors so you two can recreate your own perfect risotto!

Inspired by the TV show Willie’s Chocolate Revolution which is about Willie Harcourt-Cooze’s crusade to educate the population about real chocolate, I tracked down a source of Amedei Chuao, regarded as the world’s best chocolate. When the Amedei arrived we did a little taste test with some other 70%+ chocolate bars. Guess which one blew […]

Thought I’d shoot some junior soccer this morning. The Victorian Champions League is almost finished for the year so in between rain showers I shot some of the under 17 girls match. Here’s the album.

After shooting volley ball this week it took a little while to get my timing back. Gallery is here.

As I’m hoping to shoot some World Cup (winter sports) events in Europe, Olympics and other international events in the next few years I wanted to be affiliated with AIPS. That’s not an easy task for Australians as there is no local sports press association like other countries. My application had to be approved in […]

Here’s a good list good list of places to try if you’re in Melbourne CBD for lunch from Melbourne Gastronome.

Typical mid-afternoon light at AAMI stadium. Not ideal shooting conditions. There’s about a 15 degree slot where the player is well illuminated and the grandstand is in shade for a clean background. Here are the shots.
