Images from Day 5 and Day 6 at the Open.

The Heart v Victory Derby was always going to be interesting. Again, left the tennis to grab some images. Got to capture the 3 goals in the first half. Images here.

Time to do some more funky shots. Rod Laver Arena is bathed in bright sunlight until 4pm. The playing area is lit but the walls are in shade. There’s about a 3 stop difference so if you underexpose by 1-stop when the player is in line with the background in shade you get beautiful images. […]

Dashed over the road to AAMI Park from the Australian Open and grabbed a few shots in the first half of the match. Images here.

Day 3 had bright, harsh, Aussie sun. Discovered how beautiful the harsh light at Rod Laver Arena can be. More images here.

Getting into the swing of things. Main gallery is here. with searches for Day 1 and Day 2.

The stars turned out to help the flood fund. Images here

Ans we have a winner! Images here.

Many sports are not affected by rain. Soccer, Australian Rules Football to name two. But tennis is. No play for a whole day and then the sun came out. Shooting from a high angle makes a clean background but you need lots of patience if the player is a baseliner. There’s usually one chance for […]

Day 1 of the AAMI Classic. And then onto the Australian Open next week. Rain interrupted play but here are my first shots of tennis I’ve ever shot:

After the coffee competition it was back to AAMI Park for Round 22 of the A-League. At last it was a cloudy day so shooting conditions were a lot better than that last few rounds. Images here.

I’ve shot a lot of coffee making competitions but I haven’t done it for a couple of years now. Here are some images from the 2nd day of the Victorian Barista and Latte Art championships. Really difficult lighting but handled very well by the Nikon D3 and D3s. Images here.

Another 3pm afternoon match. Crazy light, but the upside is that the last 10 minutes was in the Golden Hour.  More images here.

A late afternoon match so the sun was hitting half the pitch as usual. Not idea but got some nice high-contrast shots. Ran into the buffer limits on the D3 – need to see if I can optimise the settings a bit more to get the full 26 raw shot. Full gallery is here.

The Canon D60 was my first DSLR. In 2002 it was USD$2,000 for the body. In 2010, the Canon EOS 550D is USD$799. Key stats: 6MP versus 18MP. So it was more than twice as expensive and had 1/3rd the number of pixels. How far we’ve come. I had a play with a 550D tonight, […]

Photos from round 19 action from AAMI park is here.

A double header at AAMI Park with the Melbourne women’s team as the curtain raiser for the men’s match. Had fun shooting with a 1.7 teleconverter on the 400mm as the afternoon light allowed me to lose 1.5 stops. Click here for more images.

At today’s W-League match I was positioned at the end of the field because of the afternoon sun lighting conditions I’ve blogged about in the past. Since most of the action was the far end of the stadium I thought I’d pull out the 1.7X teleconverter and put it on the 400mm. That combo makes […]

Thought I’d shoot some junior soccer this morning. The Victorian Champions League is almost finished for the year so in between rain showers I shot some of the under 17 girls match. Here’s the album.

After shooting volley ball this week it took a little while to get my timing back. Gallery is here.

Typical mid-afternoon light at AAMI stadium. Not ideal shooting conditions. There’s about a 15 degree slot where the player is well illuminated and the grandstand is in shade for a clean background. Here are the shots.

Back at AAMI Park on a muggy night. Shot from the far end of the pitch for a change and I liked it! Gallery here.

A cold and wet night meant shooting from the stands. Images here.

The 2nd match of Round 14 with Melbourne Victory (photos) and the Round 15 match for Melbourne Heart (photos) was back to back this week. Both matches were at AAMI Park.
